To Whom It May Concern:
As a longtime CEO of a nonpartisan, nonprofit statewide organization advocating for justice, I have been in contact with many judges and understand the qualifications to be an exceptional jurist. Knowing that, I support the candidacy of Leonard J. Rivera, unequivocally and with enthusiasm.
Mr. Rivera and I have served together for 13 years as appointed members of the PA lnterbranch Commission for Gender, Racial, and Ethnic Fairness. He serves as Chair of the Commission as well as Chair of its Interpreter Services Committee. He is a true leader: he is smart, honest, inclusive, analytical, empathic, ethical and respectful of others. He is inherently dedicated to equal treatment of all people, regardless of their background. He seeks the opinions of all Fairness Commission members and gathers as much information as he can before making a decision. He has earned the respect of Commission members as well as representatives of the three branches of government with whom he must interact while advocating for equal justice for all.
Mr. Rivera has keen legal acumen. He has gained vast experience in many areas of the law from years as a respected trial lawyer. He also is well versed in courtroom procedures and rules of evidence. That legal knowledge is invaluable to be an effective judge.
But in addition to his legal acumen, he possesses admirable judicial temperament, which includes an even-handed and calm demeanor, respect for others, compassion, and humility. I have witnessed each of these traits during our work on the PA Fairness Commission. He also exhibits good sound judgment when approaching issues and people. I trust him implicitly.
One thing that sets him apart from many practicing attorneys is his record and his passion for community involvement, often in leadership positions. Some examples include his recognition by public entities in appointing him to positions, but just as important his serving as a coach of high school mock trials, local sports teams, and as a Sunday School teacher. He founded and hosts monthly Latino Luncheons for community business leaders. His peers respect him as evidenced by their choosing him to be listed regularly as a Pennsylvania “Super Lawyer.”
I believe strongly that Mr. Rivera would make a remarkable Judge Rivera. Were I a litigant, attorney, court staff, witness, or juror in his courtroom, I would know that I’d be treated with dignity and respect.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss his candidacy.
Sincerely,
Lynn A, Marks, Esq.
